EXPLORING OUR HERITAGE

The Battle of Stamford Bridge Heritage Society (BOSBHS) was formed in 2012 to commemorate and promote interest in The Battle of Stamford Bridge 1066 and also the Viking and Saxon era of the 8-11th  centuries. The society has now expanded its aims to examine all periods of history, archaeology and social events in Stamford Bridge and surrounding villages.

The society holds monthly talks, social meetings and visits throughout the year as well as attending many local events, often in period costume. Our team visit local schools to teach about Viking and Saxon life as well as the Battle of 1066 itself. Members also carry out research, community archaeology projects and geophysical surveys in the area. Two community projects funded by Humber Museums Partnership have resulted in the creation of heritage displays in two churches located in surrounding villages. A natural dye and historical medicinal garden has been planted at the society’s Living History site in Stamford Bridge.

Our society works closely with many national and regional esablishments such as Historic England, The British Museum, Humber Museums Partnership and Museum Development North.

We hold an increasingly large collection of artefacts from the area, including those from the ancient Roman Settlement of Derventio which are often on display at our outreach events. The society continues to work towards its long-term aim of a dedicated museum within Stamford Bridge. The society has recently worked closely with Humberside Police Rural Task Force to protect the area’s rich heritage; this has led to the first Heritage Watch Scheme to be set up in the region to protect our heritage sites from illegal metal detecting.
